Top Peptides to Protect Your Eyes and Preserve Vision

a woman holding a glass of water taking peptides

Dr. Rajka Milanovic Galbraith had a high-level executive come to her with severe brain fog after starting to take peptides for mitochondrial support.

What went wrong? In his case, he skipped the foundations.

If you’re exploring peptides for eye health, especially if you’re facing midlife vision changes, this matters enormously. Because the biohacking world makes it sound simple: inject this, feel amazing, see clearly.

But that oversimplification could be dangerous.

What Peptides Actually Do

Peptides are small chains of amino acids, typically 50 or fewer. When you break down protein, you get amino acids. String them together in short chains, and you get peptides.

Your body naturally produces 7,000 or more peptides naturally. But that production declines with age. One of the most famous peptides is Insulin. The GLP-1s everyone’s talking about for weight loss? Those are peptides too.

Unlike medications or supplements that have to bind to receptors and get transported into cells, peptides give you more direct access and are typically quicker acting.

Think of it this way: when you call someone and they’re not available, it goes to voicemail. That’s your medications and supplements. They may not take effect immediately. But when you send a text message? It gets there fast. Your peptides act with the speed of a text message.

The Dangers Nobody Talks About With Peptides

Before you order anything online or start injecting compounds into your body, here are the risks you need to know.

Risk 1: Quality and Contamination

Some companies sell peptides labeled “for research use only” or “97% pure.” That 3% impurity? It’s potentially a big problem when you’re injecting something into your body.

Best case with those peptides: you buy them online and they are just not effective.

Dr. Rajka had patients say, “Well, I got this BPC injectable from such and such site, and it didn’t work.” When they switched to properly compounded peptides from a sterile compounding pharmacy, suddenly: “Ugh, that really helped my tendonitis.”

Worst case: that peptide is contaminated with an endotoxin. You don’t want that in anything you’re injecting.

Use sterile compounding pharmacies that test for purity. Make sure that the peptide was created properly and nothing is contaminating it.

Risk 2: Growth Promotion Side Effects

Some peptides promote growth hormone. If you promote growth hormone, you’re going to grow any and all cells, including cancer cells.

Should you be screened for cancer beforehand? In a perfect world, yes. One of the best tests costs a couple thousand dollars, so it’s not doable for everyone. But you need to know that side effects exist.

If you’re diagnosed with cancer while using these peptides, stop immediately. If you have a very high risk of a particular type of cancer, certain peptides simply aren’t used, or they’re used for very short durations under supervision of a MD.

Risk 3: Detox Reactions Without Proper Foundation

This is where that executive made his mistake.

If you’re full of toxins and someone gives you a potent mitochondrial peptide, you can trigger a detox reaction. Then you feel really crummy. That’s why you can’t skip the foundations and jump straight to peptides.

The 3D Protocol: Your Foundation Before Peptides

Dr. Rajka calls it the 3D Protocol. It’s the right steps in the right order.

D1: Diet and Nutrients

Even people eating the soundest diet on the planet show 8 to 10 vitamin and mineral deficiencies these days. That’s up from 3 to 5 just over a decade ago.

You need to optimize what you’re eating. Dr. Rajka uses the TASK method to an abundant diet:

  • Track what you’re eating
  • Add what’s missing
  • Subtract during an elimination period
  • Add back (this is crucial)

The add-back phase is critical. Many people go on very narrow diets, and it backfires. When you’re on a narrow diet, it affects your microbiome. Your bacteria won’t release short-chain fatty acids, which fuel your immune health and mental health. Narrow diets can trigger more food sensitivities.

Here are the top 3 improvements most people need:

Prioritize protein. About 100 grams per day for most people. If you have chronic kidney disease, that’s different. If you’re building muscle or actively losing muscle, you may need more.

Eat a balanced plate for balanced blood sugar. Combine proteins and fats with carbs. Here’s the key: eat your proteins first, then your fats, then your carbs last. This blunts the blood sugar rise.

92% of the population is metabolically dysregulated. That means suboptimal blood sugars, and that ages your eyes the quickest. For perfect eyes, keep your hemoglobin A1C at 5.2 or less.

Diversify your diet. Eat 35 different plant-based foods per week. Rotate what you eat. Don’t eat the same breakfast, lunch, and dinner day after day.

D2: Digestion and the Microbiome

If you optimize diet, you optimize the microbiome. Studies prove this. In as little as one week, you can shift it from inflamed to non-inflamed.

Your microbiome matters for immune health, mental health, and fighting off infections. It’s also how you take in vitamins and minerals.

Remember that polyphenol-rich diet you’re eating? It doesn’t do you any good if you’re not actually taking in those vitamins and minerals.

As you age or if your stress level is too high, you won’t make enough hydrochloric acid. Then you won’t break down protein properly. That means you won’t have amino acids to properly detoxify.

D3: Detoxification

This is where people get into trouble. Many start with detox, thinking that’s the solution.

You need B vitamins, magnesium, and amino acids to detoxify. You need a proper digestive tract to break down the protein you eat.

Basic detox practices: hydrate, eliminate (at least one bowel movement daily), and avoid toxic products.

If you go on a juice cleanse without those vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, you’ll start dumping toxins from your tissues. You may feel horrendous, if you haven’t laid this foundation.

Even as practitioners, you can think someone’s ready and still accidentally “throw them under the bus.” That’s why partnership matters. If you feel worse, you have to stop. It can take twice as long to recover.

Specific Peptides for Eye Health

Once you have the foundation in place, here’s what helps eyes.

BPC-157: The Swiss Army Knife

In studies (mostly done on animals), BPC-157 has been shown to slow or prevent glaucoma progression.

Oral form: Great for leaky gut, refractory reflux, autoimmune conditions. Typical dosing is 500 micrograms twice daily.

Injectable form: Better for glaucoma risk, injuries, surgery recovery. Dosing ranges from 500 to 1,000 micrograms, often short-term.

Dr. Rajka uses it pre-operatively to help people recover faster from surgery. It heals tissue like nobody’s business.

One caution: it can increase histamine in people with mast cell activation. Rare, but real.

You don’t always want to be in a healing state. It’s about balance: building tissue, breaking it down, building tissue, breaking it down. Use short periods, not continuous.

SS-31: The Mitochondrial Protector

Your eyes have the highest amount of mitochondria in your body. That’s why vision and hearing often decline first with aging.

SS-31 was just FDA-approved in September for Barth Syndrome, a mitochondrial condition that leads to cardiomyopathy. It’s not FDA-approved for eye disease specifically.

But it’s been studied in diabetic mice for supporting the retina. Think about this: 92% of the population is pre-diabetic or dysregulated. Blood sugar problems age your eyes the fastest.

SS-31 is injected, typically 5 days a week with a break. Dr. Rajka uses it when she flies (exposure to benzene from airplane fuel, ionizing radiation, circadian rhythm shifts) or when burning the candle at both ends.

It protects mitochondria from taking a hit.

MOTS-c: The Oxidative Stress Fighter

Another mitochondrial peptide. It helps with oxidative stress and supports retinal pigment, working more indirectly on inflammation.

Think of oxidative stress like when you cut an apple in half and it’s exposed to oxygen. It starts to break down. Same thing happens to body tissue when you have an imbalance of free radicals and toxins without enough vitamins and minerals.

Dr. Rajka injected MOTS-c an hour before skiing when her knee was getting shaky. Within half an hour, she was back up with her family because it’s that regenerative.

One caution: don’t overdo life just because peptides make you feel better. People can push too hard.

Humanin: The Most Potent

Of the three mitochondrial peptides, Dr. Rajka thinks humanin is the most potent.

Do not use if someone has known cancer.

She uses it to prime someone’s mitochondria before other peptides, often senolytic peptides that break down aged “zombie cells.”

Typical protocol: mitochondrial peptides for 10 days, then senolytic injectable peptides every other day for 5 days. Done anywhere from twice a year to every three months.

KPV: The Gut-Brain-Eye Connection

KPV works along the gut-brain axis. Leaky gut, leaky brain.

Most people coming in really symptomatic probably have both. This peptide can be oral or injectable.

When someone has more significant symptoms, Dr. Rajka combines BPC and KPV, either oral or injectable, to get them over the hump.

The Three Non-Negotiables for Women Over 40

If you’re a woman in midlife dealing with vision changes, here’s what you cannot skip:

1. Lay the foundation with the 3Ds. Diet and nutrients, digestion and microbiome, detoxification. In that order.

2. Optimize hormones. Stop putting up with doctors who won’t address hormones or who put you on synthetic birth control instead of proper bioidentical hormone therapy.

Studies show GLP-1s work better in women who have their hormones worked on first. One of Dr. Rajka’s family members was prescribed a GLP-1, it didn’t work, and she wasn’t on hormone replacement therapy or eating a sound diet.

Hormones and peptides work together well, but hormones come first.

3. Consider peptides as the icing on the cake. Not step one. Not a magic fix. An add-on to everything else you’re doing.

How to Use Peptides Safely

Work with a functional medicine practitioner formally trained in peptides. Not someone who just took a weekend course.

Look for practitioners certified through:

Find a qualified functional medicine practitioner who gets the whole picture.

Many practitioners now talk about peptides, but when you look closely, they only do weight loss. Nothing wrong with that, but you need someone who knows about eye health uses specifically.

Peptides work best when they come into a healthy body. Build the foundation where they can actually work and create lasting results.

Your Action Plan

If you’re exploring peptides for eye health:

Start with the 3D Protocol. Don’t skip ahead. The right steps in the right order matter.

Get your blood sugar under control. HbA1c of 5.2 or less for the best eye health.

Find a qualified practitioner who can check your toxic burden, nutrient status, and overall health before prescribing anything.

Know the side effects of any peptide you use. Know the dosing and how long to use it.

Don’t buy online from research sites. Quality matters when you’re injecting something into your body.

Your eyes have the highest amount of mitochondria in your body. Supporting those mitochondria makes sense. But only after you’ve laid the groundwork.

Peptides aren’t magic fixes. They’re powerful tools that work best in a body that’s ready for them.
