Pain-Free Eyes: Mind-Body Secrets That Work

When pain takes over your life, it’s hard to focus on anything else. Jane Hogan knows that story firsthand. Years ago, her body felt like it was beginning to break down—she later got the diagnosis: an autoimmune diseases called rheumatoid arthritis. As a structural engineer, she approached the cure like a system problem.
Pain is often treated by squashing the symptom with painkillers which can actually lead to eye diseases such as cataracts when used long-term. Jane was determined to find a non-medication route to overcome the pain associated with RA. She realized that it is a message from our body to alert you that something deeper needs attention. And if you ignore that message, it usually gets louder.
Pain is a Alarm, Not a Flaw
Most of us are taught to suppress symptoms with medications that have massive side affects and can even cause addiction like opioids. When we change our mindset to see it as an alarm that we should not press the snooze button on, we can create long lasting results. Jane shared that for her it meant looking at how her nervous system was stuck in a perpetual fight or flight response. Her body didn’t feel safe—and pain was its way of protecting her.
She first tried only physical treatments like anti-inflammatory diets, supplements, and acupuncture. They helped temporarily but didn’t stop the flare-ups. The big shift happened when she started to regulate her nervous system, processing stuck emotions, and changing her relationship with her mind and her body.
The Cycle of Fear and Pain
Pain and fear often feed each other. You feel it coming on, and the fear shows up too. That creates stress in the body. Your nervous system, already on edge, responds with even more pain. It becomes a cycle—pain, fear, more pain, more fear (even subconsciously).
This same loop shows up in vision, too. Fear of not seeing clearly or fear related to “it’s not safe to see” is a common emotional expression with vision problems, especially myopia and macular degeneration. Calming the nervous system helps both conditions. “Create safety in the body,” Jane says. That’s how the brain learns it’s okay to let go of the pain messenger.
Not Personality—Protection
Perfectionism, people-pleasing, hyper-independence—these behaviors might look like personality traits. But Jane explains they’re often protective adaptations from a nervous system that’s always on guard. “It starts as behavior,” she says, “and over time, shows up as physical symptoms.”
If your body doesn’t feel safe, it can’t heal.
From Engineer to Wellness Coach: The Pain-to-Purpose Path
Jane’s 6-step DESIGN blueprint was born out of trial and error. It’s the plan she wished she had when she was struggling. Here’s a quick look:
- Desire – Create calm. Visualize the life you want, with emotion.
- Explore – Retrain the mind. Replace the inner critic with repetition and compassion.
- Surrender – Release and forgive, not for others—but for your own healing.
- Integrate – Ground the body. Prioritize sleep, nature, and nourishing habits.
- Generate – Reconnect with joy and creativity.
- Navigate – Reflect, adapt, and expand. What’s the next version of you?
Each step includes specific habits and practices to help retrain the brain and body toward healing.
Why Supplements Aren’t the Whole Story
Supplements can be helpful. But they aren’t the main solution. “You can’t turmeric your way out of pain,” Jane says. Until the body feels safe, no pill or supplment will create lasting change.
The deeper work lies in calming the nervous system, processing old emotions, and tuning into your body’s needs and creating that next, joyful version of you, instead of just treating symptoms.
A Safe Body is a Healing Body
Jane closed the interview with a 10 minute guided meditation (great to do while palming) that invites the body into safety—through breath, emotion, and visualization. By anchoring to a positive feeling, you start rewiring the brain’s pattern of protection. These moments of calm are the first step to reducing that protection response.
And it works. Some people drop from a pain level of 8 to a 4 in minutes. Others go from a pain level of 6 to zero.
